    If a civilian doctor writes a prescription, your VA PCP can sign over the prescription to the VA Pharmacy. This is okay if it's a long term prescription, since the VA sends prescriptions by mail. If the prescription is needed immediately, you will be better off to have to have a MA , or Part D to provide medication as a backup.

    Thank you for the excellent information. I would like to ask a few questions: 1) regarding the categories - which one should I chose since I took the retirement package in Mar 2024 and receiving a separation package for 6 months . Is it work stoppage or employer settlement payment? 2) I started medicare in April 2024 and am now having being hit with IRMAA - based on 2022, 2023 tax returns but for 2024 my income will be reduced some. But in 2025 it will be reduced substantially - Can I submit the appeal for 2024 or should I wait till 2025?

    An additional thing to add in is that there are high-deductible supplement plans that cost a lot less than your $200/month number. The premium savings can cover that deductible even if you reach the deductible limit, and during the years you do not use up that deductible, you could be pocketing (or ideally saving!) those lower premium dollars to cover a later year where you do eat up that deductible,

    The elephant in the room is know your health and plan your finances. Been on A PPO advantage plan for a couple of years. Have a savings account with the yearly out of pocket amount ready to use if needed.Have never had to touch it and it’s growing at Todays interests rates. . It’s peace of mind. I make every effort to stay in network and over the past couple of years the most I have put out for things is less than 300. I would rather pay me than an insurance company. The perks are amazing too. I swim and it pays for my membership.

    You made one serious mistake in this video the Advantage Plans. You assumed that an average Advantage Plan would consider all of the services your mother received. However, especially these days, Advantage plans are refusing to cover procedures and hospitalization stay periods saying that they are not justified under the Advantage Plan requirements for prior approval of procedures. More importantly, I am saddened to hear about your mother.

    • @Theretirementnerds

      Thank you for your kind words. A big issue we see in the industry is the feelings around advantage plans. Yes, I agree that they don't have as many auto-approve procedures. Yes, they don't have a good record with things like skilled nursing facilities. But the realities around the frequencies of denials are often misunderstood. There are several comments in this video of people who went through the same thing on the Advantage plan and paid similar or lower dollar amounts, all while having treatments covered with no issues. More importantly when considering data, we look at the studies done on the matter - which admittedly are few, but there is a Kaiser study that looks at ALL prior authorizations and denials that we reference in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/sA9EzoiHjEM/v-deo.html Hope that is helpful! Thank you for watching!

    I am a retired employee from both the federal government and state government. Both plans are PPOs. My State health insurance plan is free into retirement for me and family and the plan will pay Medicare premiums. My FEHB plan is better, but I pay approximately $800 per month. It also covers me and family. The question is, when I am Medicare eligible, should I drop the federal plan where I pay out of pocket and merely keep the state plan?

    For me, it is 100% about what I can afford in monthly premiums. I'm leaning towards N, but can't afford a D or anything else. I don't want an advantage. However, if my rent continues to increase at the rate it has been, I can foresee having to drop all supplements in a year or two. Is it best to go with N and later switch to advantage if it becomes necessary?

    A good reason to take Medicare at 65, if you are retired Military your Tricare Prime goes away and if you DO NOT start medicare part A & B you will no longer have Tricare. So you have to start Medicare parts A & B then you are automatically eligible and entered for Tricare For Life. Medicare costs more then Tricare Prime but Tricare for Life is free and with these 2 medical insurance you are cover very well.

    The main problem with US healthcare is the cost. You get the same examinations, labs, medication, doctors appointments and the rest at fraction of the cost outside USA. The insurance scam system in USA has made everything extremely expensive so people have to get an insurance. If costs were like they are everywhere else, people would have a real option to just pay them themselves or get some insurance, which are much, much cheaper outside USA.

    Hi Erik - Yesterday I discovered and watched some of your very informative videos. I subscribed to your channel. I would like to comment concerning that Medicare does not cover everything, specifically, lab patient collection centers misleading posted notices on their walls. If you go directly to a lab with a prescription for blood tests and one or more of the requested tests had a wrong ICD-10 diagnosis code (Dx), such that codes don’t match as allowable by Medicare, per the lab's computer, the lab will ask you to sign an Advanced Beneficiary Notice (“ABN”) whereby it is stated that the lab believes Medicare will not cover the service and you sign agreeing to be billed. What the wrong code translates to is that based on the diagnosis (code), Medicare deems the procedure/service not medically necessary and therefore is not covered. That is different from a particular procedure not being covered in all cases. The lab collection centers have, what I deem to be misleading posters in their patient waiting rooms. The posters state that while Medicare does not cover everything, if your doctor ordered a test, it is important for your health that you get the test even though Medicare does not cover it. That is very deceiving. Medicare covers almost all tests; the situation is usually not that the test is not covered, but that it is not covered based on the (wrong) code submitted by the doctor. The lab would much rather Medicare not cover the test, and you, the patient, agree to pay for it. Why? Because when Medicare covers and pays for the service, the lab gets generally about 10% of the amount that they billed. If Medicare does not cover the test, the lab can collect 100% of the bill from you. So of course, the lab would rather bill you than Medicare. So, always, decline to sign an ABN and decline the test, get a new prescription from your doctor with the proper code, and then go get the test. If the initial test (blood draw) was done in your doctor’s office, rather than at the lab, have your doctor send the proper code to the lab with a request the lab to rebill Medicare. Both methods have always worked and I have never had to pay for any of the tests after a corrected code was submitted. A.B.

    I just retired and I’m trying to decide which way to go. I’ll be 70 when I begin my Medicare full time. I have several medical issues that can worsen as time goes on. A big factor for me is the underwriting. It’s my understanding that you can be dropped anytime from advantage plans due to underwriting and if you decide to go to Medigap, you must undergo underwriting, all of which equates to much higher premiums and or denials. There is no such problem with Plan G. I also understand that Plan N goes through underwriting yearly as well which can affect your premiums. BTW, I’m more of a Sketcher guy.

    • @Theretirementnerds
      @Theretirementnerds День тому

      Hi friend! Thank you for watching (to the end!). You cannot be dropped from an advantage time. Period. The only way you are getting dropped from an Advantage plan is if there is a monthly premium you are supposed to pay and you do not pay it, or, if that insurance company leaves your area completely. If they leave, you can pick up a supplement plan with no underwriting or a different Advantage plan. Wherever you heard Advantage plans dropping people due to underwriting is (fortunately) incorrect. Underwriting happens with Medigap, and it is if you want to go on a Medigap outside certain enrollment windows. Underwriting means you could be approved, denied, or charged higher rates based on your health. Again, this is for Supplements, NOT Advantage plans. Once on a supplement plan, you do not undergo underwriting each year (any of the Plans... G, N, etc.). Hope that helps!
